ANCOP Vancouver Reaches Out to the Local Community

To highlight the mission of Couples for Christ (CFC) in building the Church of the Poor, ANCOP Vancouver in coordination with the Archdiocese of Vancouver, enlisted in a local feeding program through The Door is Open (TDIO), a social service branch of the Catholic Charities, a registered non-profit organization of the archdiocese. The feeding program held March 14 and will continue every second Saturday of the succeeding months, is ANCOP Vancouver's initial outreach in a local setting. It was participated in by representatives from various chapters and ministries within the CFC Sector. The East Hastings corridor where many of our less fortunate brethren abound, is the area where TDIO operates and serves.

It is ANCOP's aim to help CFC in attaining its global mission and goal of pursuing total Christian liberation through social justice, respect for life, and work with the poor. The program allows CFC members to gain first-hand experience in engaging with the homeless and the needy.

The Door Is Open is a drop-in centre located at Dunlevy Avenue, in the heart of East Vancouver. The Centre supports the needs of the less fortunate people in the downtown east side. Many of their guests have compounding difficulties such as drug and alcohol addiction, physical and mental handicaps as well as maturing life stages and many other impairments. Aside from food, they provide clothing and a warm and safe environment to facilitate the ease of life for street people that so many of us take for granted.

March is the initial salvo of the monthly involvement that ANCOP has committed to serve in the local community. Representatives from Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby/New West and Surrey Chapters as well as delegates from the CFC-Youth and Handmaids of the Lord were on hand to gain valuable insights so that they could share them when it is their chapter or ministry's turn to volunteer and serve. A light early dinner meal consisting of chicken noodle soup, buttered bread, coffee or bottled water were provided to about 250 patrons.

The whole experience was an opportunity for all the volunteers to truly exercise their faith in action; an opportunity to do good to people who cannot give back anything in return. It was intimidatingly scary at first because of fear of the unknown but it was also heart-warming to hear the patrons' expressions of appreciation and gratitude. It is easy to say we love our neighbours but have we done enough to be the hands of Christ knowing full well how blessed we are? Through the feeding program of The Door Is Open, we are given an avenue to profess our faith and a chance to love more.

CFC volunteers gather for prayer and briefing.

Team members prep muffins and doughnuts.

Sharing a chuckle, the group spreads butter on the buns. Alice Cacnio of Richmond (second from right) is glad CFC ANCOP has adopted a feeding program involving the local community.

CFC-Youth volunteers Rafaela Jose & Rocky Nguyen slice buns. Helping people in the streets is a welcome change they are willing to embrace.

Gerry Andrada pours ingredients of the chicken noodle soup as Mel Juanima looks on. Gerry stresses the importance of team assignments for an orderly and efficient operational conduct.

Ellen Juanima of Burnaby/New West navigates through the kitchen that is stocked with pots, pans and cooking utensils.

With early dinner just minutes away, the cooks get the food ready for serving. Complete with apron, mitts and head gear, it is Mel Juanima's (as well as the rest of the team) first time serving the poor in this capacity. He is happy to be called and doing this service.

Liza Ulanday of the Handmaids of the Lord plays the piano while Tony Aytona provides the vocal accompaniment.

Patrons line up as the doors to the Centre are opened. In total, about 250 guests were served.

Tony Aytona of Surrey pours coffee into styro cups. He shares that it is not only physical hunger but spiritual hunger that guests come for.

Food servers, each with assignments to streamline the flow of food and traffic, constantly churn out bowls of chicken soup and buttered buns.

Cookie Aytona delivers a batch of bread.

Service promptly started at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and continued well after 5 o'clock.

The team (Alwin Yambao, Cookie Aytona, Tony Aytona, Fred Cacnio, Alice Cacnio, Susan Natura, Melody Yambao, Cecille Correa, Anna Velilla, Rafaela Jose, Rocky Nguyen, Jon Javier, Tony Dizon, Mel Juanima, Ellen Juanima, Marjorie Javier, Vicky Garcia, Amy Andrada, Gerry Andrada, Liza Ulanday) with Sister Chita and Frances of The Door Is Open.

Liveloud Arrives in Vancouver

In celebration of its twenty first year of existence in Canada, Couples for Christ in Vancouver showcased its inaugural outing, February 21, of the much acclaimed Liveloud experience. Fifteen hundred (1500) souls came to the jam-packed Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey, BC and witnessed being a part of the grand celebration. The entire event was simply awe-inspiring as the whole community came together for its first-ever adventure in British Columbia.

Spearheaded by the CFC-Youth, Liveloud is a testament to their dynamism and vigour. Aided by the insights of forebears, the horizon appears hopeful, reassuring and promising.

Archbishop J. Michael Miller celebrates the mass together with Fr. Glenn Dion, pastor of Star of the Sea Parish and CFC Spiritual Director, and Fr. Rufo "Junji" Zarate of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish.

Since its inception in 2009, Liveloud Praise Concerts have been conducted across Canada, USA, and Asia. Liveloud is a CFC-Youth campaign that aims to encourage and inspire community members, especially the youth, to share their God-given talents in music by composing original praise and worship songs.
Liveloud is also a springboard program with the goal of sharing original songs with the entire community and the larger pool of Catholic worship songs. It is through the Liveloud Praise Concert that songs, which in essence are prayers, are shared, taught, and launched at a larger scale.
The spirit behind Liveloud is one that demands action. It emphasizes the need to live authentic, transparent, and faithful lives as witnesses of Christ in the world.

Anton Brosas, full time pastoral worker, leads the Liveloud prayer worship. He challenges listeners to be missionaries in their own lives.

Michael Rodas one among the many singers and musicians in Liveloud, ably demonstrates his skills.

Pauline Genio of CFC Youth dedicates herself to Mary as Mary was instrumental in bringing her own life back in order.

Lorrenz Somollo, a self-confessed mama's boy, finds the grace of forgiveness through Mother Mary.

Ivy Ilano of Singles for Christ, remains hopeful and optimistic because the Lord God is faithful.

The Sangalang Family led by Edwin & Ylen, son Jarwin (John Marwin) and daughter Jessica Laura, all burst in joy as the youngest in the group daughter JJ (Jedilyn Joy) takes her turn in speaking in front of the crowd. The family follows Jesus as a journey of a lifetime. They all serve in the community and in their parish.

Liveloud is an opportunity to personally encounter our Lord through prayer and worship. It is also an avenue to reach out to others. Let us live loud so that we can proclaim God's greatness to all the ends of the earth.

Couples for Christ Joins ONE Conference

Couples for Christ (CFC), an international Catholic lay ecclesial movement, participated in the Vancouver Archdiocese's ONE Conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre at Canada Place last February 14. The ONE Conference is an annual Archdiocesan event aimed at cultivating, uniting, and inspiring leadership for the Archdiocesan mission. The event featured world-class speakers who travelled a good distance to share their wisdom.

The Ministry Fair featured exhibits that allowed attendees to learn more about the many and varied ministries and organizations in the Archdiocese, and allowed an opportunity to view and purchase resources for evangelization and faith formation.

Aside from being exhibitors, a good number of CFC members were part of the Executive and the Steering Committees. Several youth volunteers assisted in the conduct and administration of the event.

His Grace, J. Michael Miller, Archbishop of Vancouver delivers the opening remarks. He invites everyone to bring the joy of the gospel to those who are confused and broken in spirit.

Strengthening Your Inner Life in Challenging Times
Dr. Robert Wicks, a faculty of Loyola University Maryland and recipient of the Papal Medal from Saint Pope John Paul II, discusses spiritual and psychological approaches to maintaining perspective and inner strength in challenging times. He offers insights into how we can remain resilient and, in turn, extend our warmth to others without losing our own inner fire in the process.

Remember You Are Loved
Martha Fernandez-Sardina, a bilingual international speaker and ministry consultant, speaks about Love at the heart of the New Evangelization and the Message of Pope Francis.

Between breaks, spouses Fred & Malou Tejada engage attendees while manning the Couples for Christ exhibit.

Forming Intentional Disciples
Keith Strohm, Director of Faith Formation for Queen of the Rosary Parish in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, speaks about forming intentional disciples and the lay apostolate.

Nick Borja, Norma Borja and Jimmy Arzadon visit the Couples for Christ exhibit. CFC is one among over 60 ministries and exhibitors in the conference.

Having a distinct brand and flavour, Couples for Christ - Youth showcase their passion.

Archbishop J. Michael Miller delivers the homily in the Mass that capped the event.
